“This exhibition brings together artists from Los Angeles and my hometown of New York who explore the body not through traditional figuration, but through quiet, embodied abstraction. The artists take up the body through a rigorous engagement with surface and form—ways of approaching physicality without naming it outright.

I’ve spent over a decade working in photography and photo curation, fields grounded in the promise of revealing, of making things visible. Yet I’m always hung up on just how much resists capture. Desire and identity—especially when non-normative—often slip past representation, no matter how hard one tries to pin them down.

I borrowed the show title from Anne Carson’s poem ‘Pronoun Envy,’ where she underscores the absurdity of binary pronouns: ‘…as if all the creatures in the world were either zippers / or olives…’ Like Carson, these artists push against fixedness and labeling. Their work makes space for bodies that are slippery—those that can only be sensed and imagined.”
