STOWAWAY is pleased to present A true physics of lust, a duo presentation by Brooklyn based Hannah Beerman and Hudson Valley based Scott Vander Veen, opening August 30th from 5-9PM.
A true physics of lust presents 17 works on canvas and panel from Scott Vander Veen and Hannah Beerman. Long time friends and confidants, the duo’s seductive assemblage works assert that the surface is a malleable object. Paint morphs into printed image while interweaving with dog treats, routed grooves and plexi framed pencil drawing. Their enigmatic work is hung unconventionally across the gallery, harmonizing with their internal compositions. Impulse is exalted through the counterpoint of consideration - rules of play are enforced and then dismantled, the work’s governing systems joyously eschewed when pleasure calls.
Pulling heavily from collected archives both artists commingle the poetics of compositional and material relations. The urgent sensuality of Beerman’s brushwork contrasts with the anticipatory foreplay and catharsis of Vander Veen’s inlaid grooves. The cosmic and the self are collapsed into a single plane where the humorous and the vulnerable commingle. Here, the erotic is both unbridled urge and quiet reflection, equal parts lust and love.
